Supernatural Season 4 Rewatch 4:12 'Criss Angel is a Douchebag'
WRITTEN BY: Julie Siege
DIRECTED BY: Robert Singer
ORIGINAL AIRDATE: January 22, 2009
SUMMARY: "Magicians are dying and Sam and Dean try and find out if real magic is being used. "
MY THOUGHTS
*This is where Ruby really starts pushing Sam to get on Lilith's tail.
*This ep was actually really sad. Very dark messages and sad ideas of what will happen to Sam and Dean as they get older. If they get older. Apparently, Dean intends to die young, while Sam wants to take care of everything now so that he doesn't have to be doing this when he gets older. Lots of examples given of hunters who don't age well - the few who survive, anyway. Dean's whole "it ends bloody or it ends sad" was a pretty depressing outlook on life.
*This is the second ep we get on the idea of immortality. There's this one, Time is on my Side, and later we'll get The Curious Case of Dean Winchester. They all seem to say pretty much the same thing - that immortality kind of sucks.
*Apparently Sam liked magic when he was younger.
THINGS I LIKED ABOUT THIS EP
*Well, it was a whole lot better than the ep that came before it. XD
*I like it when they examine serious issues like immortality and death, especially in seasons 4 and 5 when these things become so important.
*Jay's decision at the end is really interesting. Why did he do it? Why didn't he let Sam die and go be with his friends? Was it morality? Was it fatalism? Really gets me thinking.
*Ruby plays Sam so well!
THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THIS EP
* The story wasn't overly creative, just another human learning spells.
* All the conversations between the old magicians seemed to drag a bit
* It was kind of a slow moving ep in general
RATING:
MOTW: B+
OVERALL: B+

The guy who played the bad guy as a young man was on House as a semi-regular at the time. Dad and I liked his character, so that was nice.
It's interesting that Sam seems to have given up on a normal life in "Wishful Thinking," but here at least he doesn't think he's gonna die young like Dean does.
I <3 all mentions of little Sam.
This episode is SO much better than "Family Remains." I can't believe they chose THAT ONE to come back to after the haitus instead of this one. This was the one they focused on in the previews during the break. They had a "Sorry to leave you hanging" promo with the last word replaced by clips of hanging!Dean, haha. It was stupid, but shows that even the people in charge of advertising didn't know what to do with "Family Remains."
There have to be run-of-the-mill bad guys (human learning spells or garden-variety ghosts mostly) sometimes, dude, haha.
This episode had weird pacing, I remember. I liked it more than most fans, I think, cause I watched it with Dad, which changed the experience :)
(no mention of how the old dude tricked Dean? hee)
