First, just little things I noticed:
The lighting seems weird in this ep. Everything is a little brownish/beige-ish. Anyone know why? Is it intentional?
Dean is the only one who has shown an ID in the last two eps. Does Sam just not have any made up for him yet?
Jess has the same birthday as my good friend and ex-roommate Vera. January 24th.
Jess was born in January 1984. Meaning she's 21 when she dies in November 2005. Meaning she was a most likely a freshman in 2002/2003. I am working under the assumption that Sam started Stanford in 2001/2002, and was one year ahead of her. (Yes, little details, but important for role play!)
Things I liked about this ep
I like that right away they show that it isn't just going to be about hunting ghosts. Monsters count too.
I like that Sam is still bothered by Jess's death. Way too many shows let a character experience something horrible and get over it way too fast. Unrealistically fast.
I like that Dean actually cares that Sam is still bothered by Jess's death.
I like the scariness of this episode. It sure made me not want to go camping for a while.
I liked Sam and Dean's little discussion around the campfire, about what their dad wanted for them, and how Dean wants to just continue on hunting, and doesn't seem too concerned about finding their father quickly, while Sam just wants to find him now and get this over with. You can already see how similar John and Sam are, in the way they are both so driven, and discontent.
I liked the introduction of Sam's rage-i-ness. One of my favorite parts about him. Such a gentle seeming guy sitting on such a frothing pot of rage.
Things I didn't like about this ep
The lighting. Already mentioned this. The colors just looked weird.
The girl and her brother seemed to buy the story awfully fast. What happened to make them believe that it was a supernatural monster as opposed to a bear? At that point some weird stuff had happened, but nothing that would have convinced me it was a Wendigo thing. I think I would have been more easily convinced that Sam and Dean were a little psycho.
The blood dripping on people from above. Okay. It's a neat visual effect and creepy. But enough already.
The Wendigo. Just didn't do much for me. Much scarier before we knew what it was. And the make-up, etc. just isn't that good compared to the monsters from later. Just kind of looked like a low-budget episode in a lot of ways.
