Supernatural Rewatch 1:01 - Pilot

So, I've decided to do a rewatch of Supernatural, since I watched the first five seasons so quickly that the episodes are all kind of blending together in my mind. That's the bad thing of watching on DVD, I think - you can watch like ten in a day and then you forget the particular details of each one. So I'm going to post my thoughts and comments about each episode as I do this. Just as a disclaimer, every one of these could have spoilers through the current episode (right now, 6:02), because I may very well be noticing things from earlier episodes that tie into something I just saw, and I'm not going to censor myself. I will, however, put them behind an LJ-cut. So if you're still watching and don't want to risk spoiling anything, don't click.

Can I just say I love this ep? For a pilot it's a really good episode. Really grabs you and makes you want to watch more. I love the 'bookends' of the deaths of Mary and Jessica (even to Dean carrying Sam from his bed both times) and the super creepy story (I still jump when that bird flies out of the house, even though I know it's going to happen!), and the bonding between Sam and Dean. I love how it's able to introduce what could be a really hard-to-believe storyline without making it seem corny and cheesy, and how it draws you in immediately to care about this family.

Some thoughts:

Jared and Jensen both look SO LITTLE. OMG. And both of their voices are high, lol.

In Mary's death scene - if she's a hunter, like we find out later, why didn't she seem to realize the significance of the flickering lights? I mean, I know the angels wiped some of her memory, but they didn't wipe all of her past from it, did they?

Jess and Sam are so cute. They really are. I love them as a couple.

Dean refers to Sam's life as a "normal 'apple pie' life." Nice book-end to 5:22, and to Season 6.

Is using fake ID's a new thing since Sam went to college? From his reaction, he seems pretty unhappy with it, not like it's something that they did the whole time he was growing up.

Love Dean's insistence on calling him Sammy, even after Sam tells him he doesn't like it. That's right, Dean, it's an older sibling's perogative. Just like I can call my little brother Teddy whenever I feel like it.

The spirit's death is a little weird. Is it like in "Home," when Mary uses her spirit energy to destroy the malevolent spirit? Do the kids destroy Constance? It looks almost like they were dragging her to hell...but a) why would the kids (innocent victims) be in hell, and 2) spirits can't do that. It must have just been spirit on spirit destruction, like in "Home." Very unlike the others visually, though. Guess they're just getting the hang of it.

I like how this episode subtly but effectively shows a) how much Sam loves Jess and 2) how much Sam is like John. The parallel definitely begins here, although I didn't realize it the first time through until much later. Jess dies; Sam immediately turns to revenge, just like his father. As for a) I'm particularly thinking of his declaration to Dean on the bridge that he just might marry Jess, b) his statement to the spirit that he has never been unfaithful to Jess, and just how very, very happy he looks when he gets home to her. Very sad.

Question, though, what brought Dean back? The fire had just started when Dean came in, and he should have been long gone by then. Unless he saw or heard something...
